Pioneering Health in the High Country: Why Local Matters in Flagstaff

At 7,000 feet in elevation, Flagstaff is much more than just a getaway for desert dwellers—it is a community built on a deep pioneering spirit. From the early days of the railroad to the historic stretches of Route 66, our mountain town has always been driven by hardworking locals committed to building something special.

To beautifully capture the spirit of our city, we highly recommend this wonderful feature from Local First Arizona: Farm-to-Table: Flagstaff — Local First Arizona.

Short on time? Here are three things that make Flagstaff’s local economy so unique, and how that same spirit applies to your mental wellness:

  • A Culture of Local Sustainability: As the Local First Arizona article highlights, Flagstaff is pioneering a massive "farm-to-table" movement. By sourcing goods from local farmers in Flagstaff, Camp Verde, and Chino Valley, our local businesses are making a promise to support a sustainable, conservation-focused future. When we invest locally, our whole region thrives.
  • The Power of Connection: The article points out that Flagstaff's history brings together "the hardworking, the hustlers, and the heroes" that created our distinct atmosphere. Thriving local economies are about more than just transactions; they are about fostering deep, resilient connections with our neighbors.
  • Nourishing the Community from the Inside Out: Flagstaff's local restaurants and businesses are fiercely dedicated to nourishing the community with quality, locally sourced ingredients. But true community health requires more than just caring for the body—it requires access to high-quality care for the mind.

Local, Sustainable Mental Health Care at Arizona Behavioral Health Associates

Just as Flagstaff’s local businesses focus on sustainable, community-driven nourishment for the body, Arizona Behavioral Health Associates provides sustainable, evidence-based care for the mind.

Community Involvement

Our roots in Flagstaff go beyond the office. Lee Lusk has coached high school speech and debate in Flagstaff for years, first as assistant coach at BASIS Flagstaff and then as head coach at Flagstaff High School. When Flagstaff High students wanted to start a team but couldn't find an adult adviser, Lee stepped in. He has taken students to the Arizona state championship, the 2014 National Speech & Debate Tournament in Overland Park, Kansas, and, in multiple years, the Tournament of Champions at the University of Kentucky.

In 2002 and 2003 our practice hosted free national screening days in Flagstaff for anxiety, depression and alcohol use. Flagstaff Mayor Chris Bavasi proclaimed National Depression Screening Day for the city, with our practice as the provider.
