Demystifying CBT

If you’ve been considering therapy, you have likely heard of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). But what exactly is it, and why is it so highly recommended?

To answer those questions, we highly recommend this excellent overview from Psychology Today: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Basics and Beyond.

Short on time? Here are the top three takeaways from the article—and how we use these exact principles to help our clients at Arizona Behavioral Health Associates (psychotherapy.com):

  • It focuses on the present: CBT is a "solutions-oriented" approach. Instead of spending years digging into your childhood, CBT helps you identify and change the negative thoughts causing you distress today. We use this highly practical approach to offer customized therapy for children, adolescents, adults, and families.
  • It is highly effective: Research proves CBT is a powerhouse treatment for anxiety, depression, PTSD, and more. To ensure your treatment plan is perfectly tailored to your brain, our clinic also serves as a premier destination for comprehensive psychological testing and ADHD evaluations.
  • Online CBT works just as well as in-person: Psychology Today highlights that virtual CBT reduces symptoms just as effectively as face-to-face therapy. Because of this, we proudly offer seamless telehealth services across over 40 approved PSYPACT and Counseling Compact states.

Community Involvement

Our roots in Flagstaff go beyond the office. Lee Lusk has coached high school speech and debate in Flagstaff for years, first as assistant coach at BASIS Flagstaff and then as head coach at Flagstaff High School. When Flagstaff High students wanted to start a team but couldn't find an adult adviser, Lee stepped in. He has taken students to the Arizona state championship, the 2014 National Speech & Debate Tournament in Overland Park, Kansas, and, in multiple years, the Tournament of Champions at the University of Kentucky.
